Arena Wide Dressage review: horse fit and seat depth tell different stories

English & stock-saddle assessment
Research judgments · 5-point scale · Horse fit is not scored
One clear seat-depth complaint; not enough breadth for a model-wide score.
A single light-handling impression lacks measurements.
Material praise has no wear history.
No detailed dressage-equipment assessment.
How to read these bars
Research judgments from original owner evidence. Horse fit and load capacity are not scored; custom and older units remain qualified.
1: serious shortcomings; 2: drawbacks outweigh benefits; 3: mixed experience or setup tradeoffs; 4: repeated positives with caveats; 5: strong consistent evidence without a material unresolved limitation. Not rated means evidence is insufficient. These scores are not averaged into an overall star rating.
Read the original owner accountsA successful horse fitting did not settle the rider’s choice
This is the important distinction in the owner record. The saddle appeared to work well for the mare, yet the rider wanted more seat containment. Do not let a promising back fit talk you into accepting a pocket that feels vague or unsupported.
Wide is now called Cob, but the gullet family still matters
Arena explicitly identifies Cob as the new name for Wide. Its current Cob Dressage page specifies the EASY-CHANGE WIDE system, 1XW–4XW, and a supplied 2XW plate. Standard plates are not compatible. The older owner’s reference to a “3xw mare” is not an instruction to choose a plate by a previous saddle’s label.
The current maker gives approximately 13.2 lb, while the retailer says 13.5 lb. Both are approximate; request the selected size’s complete weight if handling is a priority. For another dressage seat with narrow-twist owner evidence, read the Bates Dressage review.
Pros & Cons Analysis
Pros
- The reviewer likes the materials and describes the saddle as lightweight. That supports inspecting its finish and trying the lift, while the short account does not establish how the leather wears.
Cons
- The owner struggled to find a comfortable place to sit despite being pleased with the horse fit. This directly qualifies the merchant’s deep-seat description: perceived depth depends on the rider and setup, not only the marketing label.

- Check the actual saddle weight and panel balance.
What changes this choice
Keep the Wide/Cob Dressage in consideration for a broad-horse fitting, but reserve the purchase decision until you know where you sit in it. A successful width setting is not compensation for an unsuitable seat. Confirm the renamed model and compatible hardware, then compare supported riding positions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can standard EASY-CHANGE plates go in Arena Wide/Cob Dressage?
Arena specifies WIDE plates only, from 1XW to 4XW, for the current Cob model and says standard plates can distort the tree. Match the exact saddle with the maker or fitter before making changes.
Will a good horse fit guarantee I like the seat?
No. The captured owner record is a clear example of satisfaction with the mare’s fit alongside disappointment with the shallow-feeling rider pocket. Both need a trial.
